Today, let me share with you an incident that changed the way I look at life now.
A few years ago, one weekend, a friend invited a couple of us to her house for a party. At that time, my life was pretty monotonous and I wasn’t doing too well career wise.
You can imagine my surprise when we ended up on the doorstep of a house that was huge and seemed right out of a dream! When we entered the house, I realised how beautiful it was ! It had a well-lit hallway, and super luxurious dining area that was intricately designed. I had never seen such an exquisite house before and couldn’t imagine how people could earn so much in one lifetime to afford all of this!
This friend of mine was born with a golden spoon, lived in a grand villa (the kind I had only seen in movies before!) owned high-end luxury cars and travelled to any corner of the world without even completely planning the trip.
When I was at her place, it felt like I was introduced to this whole new world, that everyone living outside of this house had never even heard about!
I came from a humble background, where my salary would decide what I could or could not buy or the kind of places I could afford to go. (I know this is what some of you can relate to as well.. haha)
Up until that day, I was of the mindset that if I were earning 50k per month, it was enough and say in the future I were to work hard and get promoted and earn 100k per month, my life was set and I would be the king of the world.
Can you see here, how I restricted myself to certain boundaries and fixated my worth based on numbers??
In some ways I was stopping myself from growing as a person! (Sad thing to do to oneself!)
My friend decided to show us around the house. I saw that the villa had 6 bedrooms, a huge hall which was beautifully decorated and the entire villa was air conditioned.
5 people lived in that house, my friend, her parents and her grandparents. The family made sure that the entire house was well lit and air-conditioned at all times. The reason being that her grandparents had a poor vision and were not used to the normal temperature of our city since they had lived in the north close to Jammu and Kashmir for most part of their lives.
Are you wondering why I have been so keen on describing every little detail of what I saw back then?
It’s because it was then that I realized that for these people, their family mattered more than money.
The party was fun and vibrant as usual, there was delicious food, some expensive and great drinks and good music. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and went back home.
After the party, there were a lot of questions bubbling in my head but I didn’t want to ask my friend about it. After a few days, however, I could not resist and I gave in and decided to ask her!!
Now, I didn’t ask her questions that would make her feel uncomfortable like her net worth or something (not to mention that would be completely silly!),I just ensured that I stuck to three simple questions.
The questions I asked her were:
- How hard did your father work to reach here?
- How was he able to manage so much wealth?
- How was he such a calm and grounded human being?
Her answer left me puzzled. Here I was expecting some sort of rocket science formula to be successful, but what she told me was so plain and simple.
- She explained that her father read lots of books and updated himself about the current business trends and market conditions.
- He believed in consistency and being patient.
- He did not spread negativity and always looked at things with a positive perspective.
- He also said that it was very important to have faith in one’s abilities.
You realize why I was surprised to hear this right?
Let me explain, many of us think that successful people do things differently or they have better capabilities than us. Wrong! Infact, they believe in simplicity and consistency, is what I learnt that day.
Her words hit me hard and I realised that I was far away from practising any of these qualities.
So, it took a while, but slowly I started to self-audit. I listed out what my pros and cons were and the things that I was lacking in.
It also made me realise that laziness was my biggest problem and it held me back from coming out of my comfort zone.
I was inspired by my friend’s father and by the amount of hard work he put in to reach where he was today. He came from nothing, but built an empire by working hard.
The conversation with my friend helped me come out of my inferiority complex and focus my energy on what was important. For example, if I wanted to pursue a career in Digital Marketing like SEO, blogging or any niche. I had to learn to be patient and learn it bit by bit.
It also made me realize that when you restrict yourself to one direction, you are limiting your opportunities to grow. Having said that, I do not mean to say that diversity is bad. All I am trying to tell you is that, focus one thing at a time, achieve your goal and then set a new target.
This small incident inspired me to look inside myself and turn my life around a whole 360 degrees!
The more you work hard, the better you get at something. Start loving your work process.
Wealth is then only a by-product of your hard work!
